Gaslighting
The ultimate deception
This term of Narcissistic behavior comes from the classic Alfred Hitchcock movie Gaslight and involves an approach of extreme manipulation and deception to cause the victim to doubt their own instincts and judgement and to instead believe lies of the Narcissist. The lies may be conspicuous and even outrageous but the insidious and destructive process of Gaslighting tears the victim down to such an extent that they will turn on themselves rather than disbelieve the lies. As in the movie, some victims actually come to believe that they’re going crazy.
